John, Two weeks ago, the annual farm bill passed the state senate. Now Smithfield Foods is one step closer to getting a free pass to hurt our most vulnerable communities. The bill makes it easier for corporations to get permits to turn liquid hog waste into biogas without input from the low-income communities and people of color who live nearby. Why? To protect their polluter pals and keep industry profits high at the expense of North Carolinians’ health. 20 years ago, the state forced Smithfield Foods and other corporate hog polluters to come up with a better way to dispose of hog waste that doesn’t pollute their farms’ neighbors. But they still haven’t cleaned up their act. This bill would let industrial hog operations continue using old technology that sprays liquid hog poop into the air and onto nearby houses. It hurts people’s health and quality of life, and we have to protect our most vulnerable communities.
