In March, the Senate Rules Committee, which I chair, held the first-ever Senate hearing on the For the People Act, legislation we need to strengthen our democracy.
This month, we took the next step by holding a markup of the bill -- that's the process by which bills are amended -- to prepare it for a vote.
I can't tell you how proud I am to be advancing this critical legislation in the Senate. At a time when democracy is being attacked in ways we haven't seen in generations, the For the People Act is badly needed -- and I'm working hard to get it to President Biden's desk for signature.

Voting in fair elections is our fundamental right as Americans but that right is under attack as it seldom has been before. I'm not willing to sit back and watch as the rights of my fellow citizens, particularly Black and Latino citizens, are infringed upon.
I'm working to pass the For the People Act because it will take on many of the biggest challenges facing our democracy, from voter suppression to the dominance of big money in politics to partisan gerrymandering. It's the legislation we need to make sure that everyone is heard and heard equally.
But I'll be honest: Getting this bill passed in the Senate won't be easy. So I deeply appreciate any help you can give.
