Hi friend,
May is Asian Pacific American Heritage Month (APAHM), and LCV is uplifting Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) communities in the United States and celebrating their rich heritage. AAPIs are an integral part of this country's history and the long fight to advance environmental and racial justice, and the AAPI community is continuing to shape the fight today.
But, even during a time of celebration, we must shed light on the horrific rise in anti-Asian hate crimes since the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic ? a culmination of decades of anti-Asian xenophobia and racism that Donald Trump stoked over the last four years.
Trump and his supporters spewed racist and xenophobic rhetoric in response to the pandeminc ? rhetoric that continues to threaten the safety of Asian American and Pacific Islander communities across the country, and has led to more than 6,000 anti-Asian hate crimes over the last year. AAPI communities carry a long history scarred by xenophobia and racism in the United States, and it is up to all of us to show up as allies and speak out against anti-Asian hate crimes.
AAPI communities are still poorly represented in mainstream environmental narratives, even after decades of leadership in the environmental movement. They have always been strong leaders serving alongside other communities of color to advocate for cleaner air, safer drinking water, and healthier communities. From fighting toxic oil refineries in the San Francisco Bay Area to opposing toxic landfills after Hurricane Katrina in New Orleans, AAPIs have a powerful legacy of resistance, advocacy, and organizing in response to environmental racism.
That's why this month, and every month, LCV is committed to the fight for justice and accountability and is working to elevate the voices of communities of color within the environmental movement ? and we need LCV supporters like you to get involved. So friend, can you take action today to support AAPI communities, #StopAsianHate, and celebrate APAHM?
