Watch the CBS Forum Petition Urging City Leaders To Act On Boardwalk Crisis Hits 2,000 Signatures And Growing A new effort by a group of Venice stakeholders hopes that what once was will be again for the Boardwalk. The group recently started an online Change.Org petition asking city leaders to address crime, drug abuse, and other issues they say have made the once-famous Boardwalk unsafe for residents, businesses and visitors alike. The online petition, spearheaded by Venice Neighborhood Council Public Safety member John Baginski, asserts that cleanliness and other quality of life issues must be addressed by clearing and cleaning the Venice Boardwalk. For more than a year, LA officials have said they can't touch homeless encampments, citing COVID-19 guidance from the CDC. During that period, the number of homeless and, along with it, crime skyrocketed on the Boardwalk. "During the pandemic, Los Angeles City and County officials have allowed a humanitarian crisis to overtake iconic Venice Beach. The growing catastrophe of hundreds of homeless encampments concentrated along the beach and its world-renowned Boardwalk," the petition reads. As of May 11, a count showed there are more than 200 tents on the Boardwalk. And, according to LAPD statistics, area 14A11, which includes our Boardwalk, saw a 46 percent increase in robberies, a 43 percent uptick in aggravated assaults and a 100 percent increase in homicides. Here’s Where That Money Is Going One year after George Floyd’s murder in Minneapolis, Los Angeles city leaders on Tuesday finalized their plan for spending money that was moved last summer out of the police department and into programs aimed at helping communities of color. The vote by the City Council means some $89 million originally slated to pay for police services will instead flow to antigang initiatives, universal income programs, homeless services, education and jobs initiatives and more. The council unveiled an initial list of spending priorities that including youth and recreation programs, neighborhood beautification initiatives, and job and business programs. However, the proposals were criticized by the Los Angeles Police Protective League, the union representing rank and file police officers, for including nuts-and-bolts services, such as tree stump removals and landscaped medians. Garcetti vetoed the initial proposal and urged the council to instead spend money on racial justice, income inequality and community safety programs. The council reacted to Garcetti’s veto by overriding it and allocating $32 million toward policing alternatives, including community intervention officers, as well as homeless prevention and homeless services. Tuesday’s vote dealt largely with how to spend the remaining $56 million, as well as some adjustments to the earlier spending plan. The board of directors of the Los Angeles Police Protective League issued a statement after Tuesday’s vote that was mostly positive about the final spending plan. “The current list of funded projects, although not completely devoid of unproven programs, is a stark improvement over the initial list announced last year that consisted of curb cuts, tree trimming and other political pet projects,” the union statement said. “The council should continue to focus on reinvesting in public safety and ensuring our department is adequately staffed.” Los Angeles Times Woodland Hills Man, 26, Was Killed In Reseda Crash Possibly Caused By Street Racing Authorities identified a man Tuesday who was killed when the BMW he was driving was involved in a multi-vehicle collision in Reseda, and the investigation was continuing to determine if he was racing with another motorist at the time of the crash. The crash occurred about 8:05 p.m. Sunday at Corbin Avenue and Saticoy Street, according to the Los Angeles Police Department. Kelley Reid Spencer, 28, of Woodland Hills died at the scene, according to the Los Angeles County coroner’s office and the LAPD. According to the LAPD, Spencer — driving a black BMW M3 — was northbound on Corbin Avenue, as was a black 2015 Mini Cooper convertible that was being driven by a male juvenile whose name was not released. Both cars “were traveling at a high rate of speed,” an LAPD statement said. “The Mini Cooper collided into a black 2013 Kia Optima that had negotiated a right turn from westbound Saticoy Street to northbound Corbin Avenue,” police said. “The black Kia was pushed into opposing lanes of traffic as a result of the collision with the Mini Cooper,” police said. Los Angeles Daily News Driver Wounded In Car-to-Car Shooting On 101 Freeway In East Hollywood A driver in a pickup truck was wounded early Wednesday in a car-to-car shooting on the 101 Freeway in East Hollywood, the California Highway Patrol said. The shooting was reported about 1:55 a.m. on the northbound side of the 101 Freeway, just south of the Santa Monica Boulevard exit. According to CHP, someone in a dark-colored SUV fired several shots at a Chevrolet pickup truck. The truck’s driver was shot in the leg and the vehicle crashed into the center divider. He was taken to a local hospital. The passenger suffered minor injuries. CHP told KTLA it’s unclear what led to the shooting, but said it does not appear to be related to the recent BB gun shootings reported on the 91 Freeway in the Corona area. “It looks like it’s an isolated incident. It’s a car-to-car shooting and may be unprovoked,” CHP Sgt. Jeff Lane said. “There’s no indication that it’s related to any other shooting.” Northbound lanes on the 101 Freeway were temporarily closed soon after the shooting, but by 4 a.m. traffic was flowing again. KTLA 5 Beverly Grove Hate Crime Case: 2nd Suspect Arrested After Attack On Jewish Diners, LAPD Chief Says A second suspect was booked Tuesday for his alleged role in an attack on Jewish diners outside a Beverly Grove restaurant, an assault carried out by a group of pro-Palestinian demonstrators. During a virtual meeting of the Los Angeles Police Commission, LAPD Chief Michel Moore said the suspect, 35-year-old Samer Jayylusi of Whittier, was arrested overnight Monday in Anaheim and booked on suspicion of assault with a deadly weapon, "with hate crime enhancements being sought." Jayylusi is considered one of the "primary suspects" in the assault on May 18 on La Cienega Boulevard, the LAPD said in a statement. His bail was set at $255,000. On Friday, police arrested Xavier Pabon, 30, of Banning, for allegedly taking part in the attack, which was one of two assaults on Jewish victims last week that sparked community outrage and calls for an end to hate-motivated violence in the city. Pabon was released on bail just before 1 a.m. Sunday, according to online jail records. The two arrestees are accused of participating in the assault and beating of several Jewish diners allegedly targeted by a pro-Palestinian group the night of May 18, hours after a large protest in support of Palestinian rights amid the recent 11-day war between Israel and Hamas. ABC 7 Man Shot, Killed In Lynwood A man was shot and killed in Lynwood Tuesday evening. The shooting occurred at about 6:50 p.m. in the 10800 block of Atlantic Avenue, near Imperial Highway, according to Deputy Eva Jimenez of the Sheriff’s Information Bureau The man was taken to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead. His name was not released. Sheriff’s Homicide Bureau detectives were at the scene to investigate the shooting. No further details were released. MyNewsLA.com Compton Man Pleads No Contest To First-Degree Murder In 2014 Shooting Compton resident Joe Anthony Avila pleaded no contest Tuesday to first-degree murder for the 2014 shooting death of Robert Proano, and was immediately sentenced to 25 years to life in state prison, according to the Los Angeles District Attorney. The 22-year-old victim, Proano, was walking with his girlfriend near the intersection of Artesia Boulevard and Myrtle Avenue when he was confronted. After being shot, he stumbled to a median, collapsed and later died, the DA’s office reports. Long Beach police said the motive for the murder was believed to be gang-related. Avila, who is now 31-years-old, was arrested a month after the Feb. 10, 2014, shooting along with co-defendant Jonathan Buckner who is now 24. According to the District Attorney’s Office, Buckner pleaded no contest in January 2020 to voluntary manslaughter in the case and was sentenced to 13 years in state prison. CBS 2 2 LAX Cargo Handlers Arrested For Allegedly Stealing Gold Bars Two employees who worked at Los Angeles International Airport for a cargo handling company were arrested Tuesday and charged with stealing four gold bars that were part of a larger shipment going from Australia to New York. Marlon Moody, 38, and Brian Benson, 35, both of South Los Angeles, were arrested without incident by special agents with the FBI, according to the U.S. Attorney’s Office. A two-count indictment charges Moody and Benson with conspiracy and theft of interstate and foreign shipment. If convicted of the two charges, the men would each face up to 15 years in federal prison. The defendants were expected to make their initial appearances Tuesday afternoon in federal court in downtown Los Angeles. The indictment alleges that both men worked for Alliance Ground International, a company that provided ground handling services at LAX. On the evening of April 22, a shipment of gold bars arrived at LAX on Singapore Airlines. A total of 2,000 gold bars, each weighing 2.2 pounds and valued at $56,000, were being shipped at the direction of a Canadian bank. Los Angeles Daily News Police Identify Car Suspected In String Of Storefront Vandalism In Culver City Police in Culver City may be closing in on the suspect responsible for vandalizing several storefront windows over the past two months. At least eight businesses in the city have had their windows shattered by either a BB or pellet gun. The Culver City Police Department on Monday released video of a dark-colored vehicle driving past one building, which is believed to be involved in the crimes. Police say all of the vandalism has caused more than $10,000 in damage to those businesses. Officers on April 12 responded to two calls of vandalism in the 11900 block of Washington Boulevard regarding two businesses that had their street-facing windows shattered, according to a police statement. The next day, three additional businesses in the 12900 to 13100 blocks of Washington Boulevard sustained similar window damage. Officers responded about 11:30 p.m. on May 20 to another business in the 12700 block of Washington Boulevard that also had its front window shattered by what appeared to be BB pellets, police said. Two additional businesses in the 11900 and 13300 blocks of Washington Boulevard reported similar damage that same evening. ABC 7 Authorities Searching For 15-Year-Old Girl Last Seen In Lancaster Authorities are searching for a 15-year-old girl who was last seen in Lancaster officials reported Tuesday. Naysha Garcia was last seen in the 44500 block of Ranchwood Ave. in Lancaster on Tuesday morning. Garcia is a Hispanic girl with long black hair and brown eyes. She is 5-feet-5 and weighs about 140lbs. She was seen wearing a turquoise top with black yoga pants. FOX 11 Two Men Arrested In Connection With Shooting Of 10-Year-Old Boy In Pasadena Police announced on Tuesday the arrests of two men accused in a Valentine's Day shooting in Pasadena that seriously injured a 10-year-old boy who was playing in front of his home when he was shot. Pasadena Police Department detectives conducted a months-long investigation that culminated with the arrests of 21-year-old Joseph Mekhi Knowles of Altadena and 22-year-old Tanaj Johnson of Pasadena. Detectives last Thursday issued search warrants at several Southern California locations and recovered several pieces of evidence allegedly linking Knowles and Johnson to the shooting, and they were arrested and charged on Monday, according to police. Both men were booked into the Pasadena Police Department Jail. Knowles was being held without bail, while Johnson's bail was set at $4.09 million. The two men are scheduled to be arraigned Thursday at the Pasadena courthouse on attempted murder and other charges. FOX 11 ‘I Got Lucky’: Colorado Deputy Shot In Ambush Goes Home A Colorado sheriff’s office is celebrating a deputy who was released from the hospital Tuesday after being shot last week. Deputy Michael Hutton, who was seriously wounded, was shot multiple times while responding to a theft call. According to FOX 31, the doctor who treated Hutton was surprised the deputy was not more seriously hurt or even killed. “Just a few millimeters in any direction and we could be talking about a serious injury to the heart, the aorta or the spinal cord,” Dr. Jared Scott told reporters. Hutton was wearing a protective vest, but he took shots elsewhere on his body, the sheriff’s office said. Video posted by the Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office showed officers lining up to greet Hutton as he was rolled out in a wheelchair. Other law enforcement officers expressed their relief. PoliceOne Public Safety News Firefighters Battling Blaze At Compton Liquor Store A fire broke out at a liquor store early Wednesday in Compton, officials reported. The erupted about 5:45 a.m. at the liquor store located at 2430 E. Alondra Blvd., according to the Los Angeles County Fire Department. Video from Sky5 showed firefighters battling the blaze from outside of the building, with flames and smoking emanating from the roof. No injuries were reported. A portion of Alondra Boulevard was shut down.
