Confirm David Chipman: Addressing our Gun Violence Epidemic Requires Strong Leadership at Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives

WASHINGTON — In response to today’s Senate Judiciary confirmation hearing for David Chipman to become the Director of the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, the Coalition to Stop Gun Violence (CSGV) released the following statement endorsing Chipman for the position. CSGV, the nation’s oldest gun violence prevention organization, believes that David Chipman’s experience, leadership and integrity make him uniquely qualified to bring the ATF into the 21st century and curb the flow of illegal and stolen guns into American communities. CSGV urged the Senate to confirm his nomination quickly so that he can begin implementing policies vital to saving American lives.

Josh Horwitz, Executive Director of the Coalition to Stop Gun Violence, issued the following statement:
“As America’s deadly gun violence epidemic continues to spread and disrupt American life, it is more important than ever to have strong, sound leadership at the head of the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF). David Chipman has more than 30 years of experience in public safety, including as an ATF special agent, and he understands the urgency of reducing gun violence in America. His nomination comes at a time this agency and the country desperately need effective leadership to address America’s gun violence epidemic.

“The ATF has been hamstrung by financial and organizational roadblocks set up by the gun lobby and its allies in Congress for too long. The nation depends on strong leadership at the helm of the ATF to effectively prevent illegal guns from getting to American streets. No one understands these challenges and the ways to address them better than David Chipman. The good people who serve the ATF will benefit from his wealth of experience on this issue.

“David Chipman is the right man for this difficult and fundamentally important job. The Coalition to Stop Gun Violence urges the Senate to swiftly confirm David Chipman and allow him to get to work on behalf of the American people.”
