NEW: Family members whose loved ones were killed by NYPD officers endorse Brad because of his steadfast advocacy to hold the NYPD accountable

Brad Lander for NYC Comptroller

John --

Brad has shown up for the movement for police accountability, as Iris Baez put it, “time and again.”

Now, five family members whose loved ones were killed by NYPD officers are supporting him as the best candidate to hold the NYPD accountable for misconduct and excessive force as NYC Comptroller. Iris, the mother of Anthony Baez who was killed by the NYPD in 1994, joined other family members in a new digital ad supporting Brad.

WATCH and share: Iris Baez, Victoria Davis, Samy Feliz and Public Advocate Jumaane Williams talk about Brad’s commitment to police accountability and endorse him for NYC Comptroller.

Yesterday we said George Floyd’s name. We must also continue to say the names of Anthony Baez, Delrawn Small, Allan Feliz and too many others killed by the NYPD.

Brad is not new to the fight for police accountability. His first civil disobedience arrest was at a protest against the NYPD’s killing of Amadou Diallo in 1999, shot 41 times while reaching for his wallet to identify himself.

As a council member, Brad partnered with police reform advocates, family members and Public Advocate Jumaane Williams on police accountability campaigns, passing the Community Safety Act to curb discriminatory stop-and-frisk policing over Mayor Bloomberg’s veto in 2013.

Last year, when the pandemic fiscal crisis hit, he was the first council member to call for the City’s hiring freeze to be applied to the NYPD, and ultimately voted against a budget that failed to prioritize investments in communities over policing.

He has laid out thoughtful plans to make the city safer by investing in mental health services, youth jobs, and community-based gun violence prevention programs, while also using the audits, contracting, and oversight roles of the Comptroller’s office to achieve real accountability.

We need a Comptroller who will stand with New Yorkers facing violence and injustice, and work alongside them to achieve real change. That’s what Brad has done throughout his career, and why he has earned the trust of these families.
