the bill would target endangered species that often fall “under the radar” including North American butterflies, various Pacific Island plants, freshwater mussels, and Southwest desert fish.
Hey John — wanted to make sure you knew about a just-introduced piece of legislation that would help save some of the most imperiled species in the United States.
SEEC member Rep. Raúl M. Grijalva proposed the Extinction Prevention Act of 2021 that would provide funding for species that are on the verge of extinction.
Specifically, the bill would target endangered species that often fall “under the radar” including North American butterflies, various Pacific Island plants, freshwater mussels, and Southwest desert fish.
SEEC members are leading the way when it comes to protecting our endangered species, but we need your help to support our members. Will you pitch in to our Action Fund today?
Here are the facts about just some of the species that the Extinction Prevention Act is trying to save:
North American butterflies are one of the fastest declining endangered species. Of all known butterfly species, not a single one is seeing their situation improve.
70% of US freshwater mussel populations are at risk for extinction and 38 species have already been lost forever.
42 species of the Southwest desert fish are endangered and threatened, with droughts brought on by global climate change only imperiling their situation further.
John — The Extinction Prevention Act would immediately provide $5 million annually for each species for habitat restoration, population monitoring, community education, and enforcement to save these critical species.
Thanks to your help in 2020, SEEC PAC was able to re-elect over 95% of our pro-environment members to the U.S. House of Representatives — defying the odds on a night where Democrats lost seats. Now we are counting on you to help our SEEC members pass climate, clean energy and environmental justice policies in the 117th Congress while we undo the damage of the Trump Administration. But if you'd like to receive fewer emails, we understand. You can click here to only get our most important messages, or you can unsubscribe.
