Gov. DeSantis signed into law a bill that removes a local Florida government’s ability to take action to prevent gun violence. This is a dangerous attack on gun safety that puts our communities in harm's way.

This dangerous action shows that DeSantis will only do the bidding of the NRA and gun manufacturers while ignoring the will of families and children. Local communities should have the right to make their own rules to protect their people. Instead, the GOP will penalize local governments up to $100,000 if they even attempt to pass any gun regulations that are stricter than state law.

The sponsors of this bill said it’s designed to “send a message” to local governments. This legislation benefits no one but DeSantis and the GOP, who prioritize big gun corporations and their fat-cat lobbyists over public safety.

With DeSantis tearing away the right for local communities to pass gun safety ordinances, we need to refocus on federal action — an effort I am leading in Congress.

My #1 priority is keeping our communities safe, and that starts with passing legislation like universal background checks, banning assault weapons and large magazines, and keeping guns out of the hands of criminals and extremists.
