Dear friend --

The systems in place to protect pregnant folks and caregivers in the United States is abysmal. From prenatal healthcare to parental leave, our policies are failing the people who need them most.

This year has been particularly hard on women, and especially women of color. Medical racism makes it hard for us to seek care and makes us less likely to be believed when we do. Many women were forced to take on additional childcare responsibilities as well as continue to work in low-paying, high-risk jobs.

Last week, we passed the Pregnant Worker Fairness Act, which requires employers to give pregnant employees reasonable accommodations. We must also pass the American Families Plan, which will continue to build our care infrastructure and offer paid leave and child credits.

But neither of these bills are enough on their own. We must continue to reckon with the systemic racism in our healthcare industry, change the way we value care work, and expand workplace protections to include domestic labor.
