John —
Parenting young children while incarcerated is exceptionally hard, but for thousands of parents it’s reality.
More than 60% of women in prison have children under the age of 18 and almost 80% of women in jail are mothers, according to the Prison Policy Initiative. When mothers are imprisoned, it has a major impact on their children and family. The emotional grief of physical separation, the distances that must be traveled to see incarcerated loved ones, and harsh rules of prison life all compound the suffering. Yet conversations about mass incarceration often overlook mothers and children.
Today, we’re hosting a Facebook Live conversation with three exceptional exonerated women — Heidi Goodwin, Elizabeth Ramirez, and Sabrina Butler-Smith — each of whom were mothers to young children when they were wrongfully convicted, and who continue to fight against injustice. They’ll be joined by our Director of Social Work, Suzy Salamy.
Join us live on Facebook or Instagram today at 2 p.m. ET — this is a conversation you won’t want to miss.
Hope to see you online,
— Innocence Project
