Dear John,

Amazon will hold its annual shareholder meeting today — where Jeff Bezos and Andy Jassy will report to investors on the company’s performance over the past year and celebrate the $21.3 billion in profits that the company generated for shareholders in 2020. But this year, more than any other, Amazon’s role in our democracy and economy is also on the agenda.

As a member of Athena, the Partnership is working to raise our collective voices this week, and demand that Amazon protect Black lives and end practices that harm workers and communities of color. Will you sign our pledge today and join us? [[link removed]]

The pandemic and murder of George Floyd forced a reckoning over structural racism in America. Over the last year, organizers and activists came together to hold Amazon accountable for its failed pledge that Black lives matter. Activists fought back against Amazon’s expanding partnerships with violent police departments; protested the firing of Black whistleblowers who worked at Amazon warehouses; and fought Amazon’s environmental damage in Black and brown neighborhoods, disproportionately impacted by COVID-19.

But Amazon’s anti-Black business model [[link removed]] continues to grow every day: Over the last year, Amazon doubled down on its support for police [[link removed]] and ICE [[link removed]] , expanding the criminalization of brown and Black people. And, just over a month ago, Amazon spent millions to harass and intimidate Black workers in Bessemer, Alabama and stop them from organizing [[link removed]] to end the surveillance that enforces a brutal and dangerous pace of work [[link removed]] .

Our movement just won a major victory [[link removed]] by pressuring Amazon to temporarily stop selling face recognition to local police departments. But we can't stop until we’ve ended Amazon’s policing of Black communities, workers, and immigrants. Sign the pledge and join us [[link removed]] !

In solidarity,

Lauren Jacobs
