Yesterday Texas Republicans sent House Bill 1927, the "permitless carry" bill, to Governor Greg Abbott's desk for his final seal of approval. Within hours, concerns poured in from all over the state, highlighting the serious dangers that HB 1927 present. Members of the El Paso delegation and famlies of those impacted by the mass shooting on August 3rd, 2019 were among the loudest in opposition. Do you oppose permitless carry laws?

So here's the truth about Texas's new relaxed firearms law: 🚫 HB 1927 removes the requirement for Texas residents to obtain a license to carry handguns if they’re not prohibited by state or federal law from possessing a gun. 🖥️ Requires the Texas Department of Public Safety to post a free online course on gun safety and handling on its website. However, HB 1927 provides no real world applications of safety techniques, nor does it address whether or not a child could access said posted videos without parental consent. 👮♀️ Opposed by law enforcement organizations because it will make it more difficult for officers to determine who is unlawfully carrying a weapon. 📅 Once signed, the bill will go into effect in September. Last night many of you sent messages of encouragement and even financial support to keep Democrats in the fight. I was surprised by the sheer number of responses to my email about the passage of permitless carry in Texas, but I shouldn't have been. Our state has been through too many tragedies in recent years for this bill to not inflict its emotional pain. I felt the ache in your hearts and the fire in your bellies and I want you to know that I am here for you. I am already working with my colleagues in Washington to find solutions to put a stop to gun violence — like requiring background checks on all purchases. I will keep doing whatever I can to pass federal laws that protect your families from being gunned down in a grocery store or while driving down the highway on your way home from work.
