Dear Prosperity Now community members, partners, and friends:
Today marks the one-year anniversary of the murder of George Floyd, a man whose name has transformed into a global symbol for the fight to preserve Black lives and end police brutality. George’s murder shook the world. It grieved hearts, opened eyes and sparked some of the most racially diverse demonstrations in the history of our country — and even the world. As we remember his death today, we must also remember the value of his life and humanity. George’s life mattered. His dreams and his future mattered.
When I think about the tremendous grief and anger that those nine minutes and twenty-nine seconds of video footage caused so many of us, I also think about the pain that will forever remain in his little girl’s heart. Her tender words have proven true: “My daddy changed the world.”
Rallies and observations will be held throughout the country today, alongside challenging reflections on how much progress we have actually made in the 365 days since his painful murder. One year later, our reality remains that though we have strides to celebrate, we also have more than 1,000 new deaths to acknowledge: all lives that ended at the hands of police since May 25, 2020.*
These numbers – and the people behind them – tell a story that we cannot ignore. At Prosperity Now, this has been our driving mission and today we remain committed to advancing racial justice. We will continue to work ardently to close the racial wealth divide and walk alongside the Black community as it continues to bear immense pain and exclusion caused by centuries of institutional, systematic, and often state-sponsored inequality. We stand in solidarity with this community and all marginalized people — Latinx, Native, immigrant, LGBTQ, Asian American, people with disabilities and more — in the fight for racial and economic justice.
As we commemorate this tragic day, we cannot lessen the pressure of our demand for real police accountability. It remains urgent and imperative. That is why we are working harder than ever to actively name and dismantle racist systems and structures wherever we find them – be it in our systems, cultural practices, communities or institutions. On this important day, I invite you to visit our website [[link removed]] and Action Center [[link removed]]so we can strengthen our collective voice and continue to demand action.
Though we have achieved some critical reforms, from changes in local policing practices to new proposed national legislation, we have a long way go before everyone can fully enjoy the promise of liberty and justice for all.
That is why our fight continues. There is a fierce urgency to take a stand. But within our collective vulnerability is a collective strength.
We hope you will join us.
