Hello —

One year ago today, a white police officer murdered a Black man named George Floyd in Minneapolis.

In the months that followed, hundreds of thousands lifted their voices and used their collective power to march for justice for George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, and the countless other Black and Brown Americans who have been murdered by those sworn to protect and defend them.

I stood with them then, and still stand with them today as we continue to fight for justice.

The hard truth is liberty and justice for all is not a reality for everyone — especially when it comes to the Black community. We must work together, with urgency, to change that. Black lives depend on it.

We have so much work to do to heal the wounds of racism in our country, and we must do more than hoping and praying that this will get better. We must fight against the culture of racism and fix the systems that allow repeated patterns of violence and injustice toward Black Americans.

That’s why I support the George Floyd Justice in Policing Act in the Senate — a critical bill to stop no-knock warrants, end police brutality, hold police accountable, improve transparency and create structural change that protects every American’s right to safety and justice.

As we know too well, the tragic murders of George Floyd and Breonna Taylor were not isolated incidents. They were part of a much larger problem — a systemic problem.

I've always believed that those responsible must be held accountable to the fullest extent of the law, but that is not enough. We must also work toward justice for the entire community by taking meaningful action to dismantle systemic racism.

We cannot rest until there is true liberty and justice for all in America.
