John,
One year ago today, George Floyd was murdered by a police officer in Minnesota.
We all saw the footage that sparked a global movement for Black lives. Floyd was cruelly pinned down for nearly nine and a half minutes, repeating 27 times that he could not breathe.
Let’s not get it twisted, George Floyd did not sacrifice his life for any cause or movement. His life was brutally taken in the act of murder.
George Floyd should be alive today — that’s why there can never be justice. But his legacy still lives on, and it's on us to make sure his death was not in vain.
By passing the George Floyd Justice in Policing Act. By ending qualified immunity for police officers. And by doing everything in our power to build a better world that values Black lives.
Today, I want to celebrate the life of George Floyd so that tomorrow, we can continue the fight for justice and accountability for Black lives in his honor.
In solidarity,
Barbara Lee
