October Monthly Meeting: Canvassing and the Green New Deal

Thursday, October 10, at 7:30 pm
Brooklyn Commons, 388 Atlantic Avenue between Hoyt and Bond

This Thursday we’ll get together for our monthly meeting and hone our canvassing skills. In preparation for a town hall on November 7 focusing on Congressman Hakeem Jeffries, we will work on developing our talking points on the Green New Deal. Our guest will be canvass trainer extraordinaire Laura Shindell, an organizer for Food & Water Watch, who will give us tips and lead us through a practice exercise.

And, of course, we’ll talk about all of  350Brooklyn’s current campaigns and have some good, old-fashioned conversation. Come early to talk to 350Brooklyn friends and buy a drink or a nosh!

Contact Your Council Member and Put Some 350Brooklyn Muscle Behind the No Plastics Campaign!

New York State took a good first step in reducing its single-use plastic consumption with the bag ban that goes into effect in March 2020. The New York City Council strengthened that law by adding a fee on paper bags.

But single-use plastics is more than a bag problem - straws, cups and bottles end up in our environment breaking down into microplastics that end up in the food chain.

The New York City Council will vote on Council Member Espinal's Plastic Straw on Request bill (#936) on October 17th.

Use this link to contact your council member and ask him or her to vote "YES"!

And while you're at it, talk some Trash! Let your council member know you support Intro 1574:

Trash is a dirty business. Trucks from 90 different private companies ride circles around each other hauling waste from NYC business customers, spewing excess greenhouse gas, contributing to high asthma rates, and leaving a dismal trail of accidents.

The Transform Don’t Trash NYC campaign is promoting the Commercial Waste Zone Bill (Intro 1574), which would assign a single hauling company to each commercial district through a competitive process and would hold these companies accountable to enforceable environmental, labor, and community standards. So far 23 New York City Council members are backing the bill.

If your council member is among the Brooklyn contingent that has not yet backed the bill, please add the request to support Intro 1574 when you call.

The Brooklyn City Council members who have NOT yet supported the Commercial Waste Zone Bill are Laurie Cumbo, Chaim Deutsch, Alan Maisel, Mark Treyger, Alicka Amprey-Samuels, Robert Cornegy, Kalman Yeger, and Matheiu Eugene.

Here's the link again. Contact your council member and tell them Yes Plastic Straw on Request bill (#936) and Yes on Commercial Waste Zone Bill (Intro 1574).

Save the Date: Park Slope Halloween Parade

Need a fun plan for Halloween? As usual 350Brooklyn will be marching in the annual Park Slope Halloween Parade. All ages, kids and grownups alike, are invited to join us (wearing costumes of your choice!) to help raise our profile and coax more of our neighbors into climate activism. Watch this space!

Can You Help?

In November, 350Brooklyn is going to put on its first-ever fundraiser, a "Pre-Holiday Hootenanny" at the Jalopy Theatre in Carroll Gardens.

Are you a foodie with ideas about yummy appetizers or an eye for appealing arrangements? Or maybe you have a friend with a wine store or a micro-brewery who might donate some potables for a great cause. Do you have retail or sales experience? You could help organize our silent auction!

Whatever your skills, we need you! It’ll be a lot of fun! If you can help, let Sara Gronim know: [email protected].

350Brooklyn takes local action to solve the climate crisis. We are an all-volunteer organization and welcome people of all backgrounds, skills, and availability. Interested in volunteering? Contact [email protected]. While we are an affiliate of 350.org, we are programmatically independent and our financial support comes solely from our members. Can you offer financial support?
