A year ago today a former Minneapolis police officer knelt on George Floyd's neck and back for 9 minutes and 29 seconds until he was dead. Mr. Floyd's murder was caught on video, and the brutal footage sparked protests around the world. A month ago, Mr. Floyd's killer was found guilty of all charges brought against him. This was accountability delivered for Mr. Floyd's family and loved ones, but in a truly just world, George Floyd would still be alive. Our fight for true justice and accountability didn't end that day. It continues now. For generations, our communities have been forced to live under a racist system that is killing Black and brown people. Our neighborhoods are treated like war zones, and the people who swore to serve and protect us are too often the instigators of violence, discrimination, and corruption. As a Black man, this is a universal truth that I was forced to reckon with at a young age, but I am fighting in Congress to change and reform the system. Just days after her father's murder, little Gianna Floyd said, "Daddy changed the world." She's right, and it's why we named the George Floyd Justice in Policing Act in his honor. There is no one piece of legislation that will right this wrong or reform the system, but the George Floyd Justice in Policing Act is a bold, historic first step. To show your support for this legislation, you can sign on here. Today is a difficult day, and my heart is with Mr. Floyd's loved ones, Minneapolis, and the entire Black community. I hope that May 25 becomes a day of remembrance for Mr. Floyd and a day of action. In solidarity, Dwight
