5 Things to Know about the IEA’s Roadmap to Net Zero by 2050 

It’s widely understood that the earth must reach net zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2050 to avoid the worst impacts of climate change. To get us there, the International Energy Agency released a roadmap. WRI’s energy and climate experts unpack the new IEA study. One area of disagreement: they consider the IEA’s estimates of biofuel use “unrealistic” because it would compete with food needs and other land uses. Read more.

As Cities Grow Across Africa, They Must Plan for Water Security 

The number of people living in African cities could double in the next 30 years, to an estimated 1.5 billion. Where will they get clean drinking water? WRI’s Rogier van den Berg, Betsy Otto and Aklilu Fikresilassie identify three pathways to building urban water resilience in Africa.  Top of the list: “Cities should be planned to meet water needs, using approaches that extend beyond the city limits and consider systems change throughout entire city-regions.” Read more.

7 Policy Proposals to Restore U.S. Trees: How Do They Compare? 

Restoring trees to landscapes is one of the few ideas that both parties in the U.S. Congress like. WRI’s Jillian Neuberger, Alex Rudee and Haley Leslie-Bole examine seven options currently before the Congress. Some utilize economic tools, such as expanded carbon markets, while others emphasize planting seedlings. Which of the proposals are likely to be more effective? Read more.

The trees provide shades for her animals, and the money she earns by selling the fruit is used in part to pay for her children’s tuition and school supplies. When women own land, their communities tend to be more prosperous.
