A year ago today, the world erupted in anger as a video of a Black man killed by police in Minneapolis went viral. The man killed was George Floyd, and he was killed by Derek Chauvin, a then officer who knelt on his neck even as he begged for his life. What followed his death were protests across the country, and then the world, demanding an end to state sanctioned killings of Black lives.
His death changed many of us. And the world.
But, George Floyd should be alive.
Too often the communities that experience police violence are often brutalized by gun violence. The mere presence of a gun on police officers can make normal interactions escalate to deadly encounters.
Police violence is gun violence.
We are living in what feels like a never-ending cycle of police violence against people of color.
If we want to create a nation that works for all, we must start with creating a nation where people of color are free from violence, including violence at the hands of police.
A year after his death, George Floyd’s family, his daughter, and his community miss him.
We need substantive solutions that invest in our communities and hold those in power accountable.
Please consider donating to the George Floyd family foundation today in his memory. [[link removed]]
In solidarity, we will continue to fight until all Black lives matter.
