John,
Today marks the one-year anniversary of George Floyd's murder at the hands of a Minneapolis police officer, while others stood by. His death was yet another painful reminder of the deep-rooted inequities that still exist within our nation.
From Minneapolis to Washington State to Washington D.C., people came together to call for justice and foundational change. These protests became one of the largest movements in American history and, we hope, an inflection point.
While George Floyd's murderer was held accountable for his actions, I know that his conviction alone will not heal the deep wounds or fix the systemic problems that are the result of over 400 years of slavery, racism, and inequality on our soil.
There is a pattern of unarmed black men being killed during encounters with law enforcement. There is also a pattern of unequal treatment in our criminal justice system, our schools, our hospitals, and our economy with far-reaching, multi-generational effects. Too often, because of this, Black Americans are denied the same opportunities for life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness.
The fight for racial justice and equity is far from over. We must continue working to reform systems in the United States that unfairly target Black people and people of color.
