In this email, I will be discussing police brutality, anti-Black racism, and murder. Please only continue if you feel comfortable doing so. If you would like to show support for justice in policing, you can sign our petition here ([link removed]). -- Derek
Hello,
Today marks one year since the tragic murder of George Floyd. While Mr. Floyd's killer was held accountable and convicted for his crimes, there is still so much more we need to do to achieve true justice.
We need to continue showing up, speaking out, and demanding change. George Floyd inspired so many people to raise their voices -- some of them for the first time -- and we cannot stop until justice is real for ALL Americans.
One of the best ways we can honor George Floyd's memory is by ensuring a world where Black and brown individuals are not targeted because of the color of their skin. Too many lives have been cut short and there are far too many tragic stories.
There isn't one single policy that will erase centuries of systemic racism, but the George Floyd Justice in Policing Act is a strong step forward. Mr. Floyd's family has expressed their support for this legislation, and the House has already passed this bill.
This historic legislation would:
- End the use of chokeholds;
- Combat racial profiling;
- Limit the transfer of military equipment to local police departments;
-Ensure officers who commit wrongful conduct are held accountable;
-Establish a National Police Misconduct Registry;
- And much, much more.
Friend, if you would like to take action today, you can sign our petition here ([link removed]) to call on Senate leadership to bring the George Floyd Justice in Policing Act to a vote.
It's an honor to represent you,
Derek
