Friend,

Today marks one year since George Floyd was killed by police in Minneapolis.

His tragic death along with Breonna Taylor and too many others show how law enforcement have used drugs as an excuse to target, harass, assault and kill Black, Brown, and Indigenous people.

It also spurred widespread protests in demand of police accountability and forced Congress and the Biden administration to promise to act.  Unfortunately, their response has been the Justice in Policing Act, a bill recently passed by the House that does not go nearly far enough.

The Senate is negotiating the bill right now: tell your Senators to strengthen it and end deadly policing practices fueled by the drug war.

We oppose the Justice in Policing Act in its current form because it fails to address policing practices that are disproportionately used against people of color in drug investigations.

While the bill places restrictions on programs that facilitate the transfer of military equipment to local police departments, it does not outright put an end to such programs. And while it prohibits no-knock warrants for drug cases, it does not outlaw quick-knock raids which can be just as deadly.

It also continues to fund police departments and the war on drugs, rather than shift resources to education, housing, harm reduction services, and other infrastructure that strengthens communities and increases public safety.

The Senate has the power to address these concerns in the bill over the next few weeks. Contact your Senators right away to demand real federal reform and dismantle drug war-fueled policing.

Together, we won’t stand by and let drugs continue to be used as an excuse for police violence.

George Floyd and countless others deserve real justice and we must keep pressure on Congress and the Biden administration to deliver on their promises.

Sincerely,
