Yesterday, I visited a camp in Matamoros, Mexico where hundreds of asylum-seekers wait in desperation due to Donald Trump’s so-called “Remain in Mexico” policy.
What I witnessed was horrific.
Babies as old as 20-weeks were being fanned by their mothers to keep cool, children were bathing and drinking from a contaminated river, and families of four or five were cramming into small tents.
This camp was the result of Trump’s intentional cruelty towards immigrants. The cruelty is the point.
We met with representatives from the Texas Civil Rights Project who have been working tirelessly to advocate for these men, women, and children.
I accompanied 12 LGBTQ and disabled asylum seekers across the border to make lawful claims.
But hours later, all 12 were sent back.
This is heartbreaking. This is infuriating. This is un-American.
We will not give up this fight. The Texas Civil Rights Project and others will keep fighting for these vulnerable migrants -- but they need our help.
America should not be a place where we slam the door in the face of immigrants or lock them in cages.
We have a lot of work to do.
