Today marks the one year anniversary of the horrific murder of George Floyd.

Through due process and at the hands of 14 jurors, a murderer has been convicted, there is still so much that needs to be done. Even before the killing of George Floyd, countless Black Americans have been senselessly murdered and many more innocent people will be killed in the future if nothing is done now. The epidemic of killing Black Americans won’t go away without profound change.

We know George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, Michael Brown, Trayvon Martin, and so many others should still be alive today. That’s why the House of Representatives passed the George Floyd Justice in Policing Act — a bill designed to restore trust between law enforcement and the communities they serve, and to make sure police officers are held accountable. I was proud to vote for this important bill, but now, it’s time for the Senate to bring it to the floor for a vote and send it to President Biden to sign into law.

Join me in calling on the Senate to pass the George Floyd Justice in Policing Act. We must reimagine policing and end the systemic injustices facing people of color in our country — if not, more people will suffer for years to come. [[link removed]]

All across the country, communities have police reform. Congress has a critical role to play in supporting local governments in setting standards and providing police departments with both the resources and accountability they need to serve, protect, and respect all of our nation’s communities. The goal here is simple: everyone should feel safe and protected regardless of their zip code or background.

The George Floyd Justice in Policing Act will ban no-knock warrants and chokeholds, overhaul qualified immunity, recognize lynching as a federal hate crime, and prohibit racial profiling in law enforcement.

This legislation is a critical step forward in dismantling systemic racism and creating a nation that is more fair and just.
