The word “summiteer” may bring to mind a mountaintop, backpacking gear and that victorious arms-to-the-sky power pose. At Poynter, that moniker appropriately refers to the 100+ graduates of our annual Summit for Reporters and Editors. “Summiteer” captures the elation of accomplishment and the clear-eyed perspective from reaching new heights that participants gain through the program.

After a pandemic pause in 2020, Poynter’s Summit for Reporters and Editors ([link removed]) is back on the calendar, with online sessions scheduled for July 1, July 8-10 and July 16-17. My colleague Mel Grau caught up with longtime seminar director and assistant managing editor for journalism initiatives at The Dallas Morning News, Tom Huang ([link removed]) , to learn what’s new with the popular program. Ahead of the June 1 application deadline, they talked about dealing with isolation, viewing journalism as a craft and translating the Poynter “magic” to virtual spaces.

Build a Stronger Team by Being a Better Coach

This new, hyper-focused workshop from Poynter will teach leaders at news organizations the language and art of coaching.

How do you effectively coach people who work remotely? With deadlines looming and shrinking staffs, how do you prioritize these “how can I help” conversations? How do you ensure that you’re coaching everyone you oversee fairly?
