Today, Republicans have priortized guns over Texans in the most ironic and disturbing of ways. The Texas Legislature took a final vote to pass the permitless carry bill, which now heads to Greg Abbott's desk for his signature before it officially becomes the law in Texas.
Add your opposition for permitless carry: If you've saved your payment information with ActBlue Express, your donation will go through immediately: By stating that Texans should not have to be permitted to carry a weapon, they have effectively killed their own argument for requiring identification at the voting booth. After all, if you don't need identification to arm yourself with a deadly weapon, why do you need identification to arm yourself with a paper ballot?
The truth is that Republicans are afraid of Black and Brown voters because we are demanding justice for the people who are dying in the streets at the hands of the NRA and their friends — friends they refuse to answer for when trouble arises. And trouble will come around. Because when all gloves come off many more Black and Brown men and women will be shot, arrested, or falsely accused of gun related crimes than white men because of this wreckless new law.
It is also true that other states have successfully implemented permitless carry laws. However, Texas still has a long way to go to reconcile our past beetween racism and the call to arms. If we still can't see how the two are related, we have far too much work left to do.
