Friend,
Americans now owe a total of more than $1.7 trillion in student loan debt. And we know that borrowers with student loan debt are much more likely to postpone major life milestones and other important activities, such as marriage, having children, buying a home or taking a vacation to finally spend time with loved ones.
The AFT has been working to address the student debt crisis for nearly a decade. We have counseled thousands of members at our student debt clinics, provided a free benefit to union members that will save them an estimated $500 million, taken student loan giants like Navient to court, and sued the Trump administration for failing to forgive eligible borrowers who made payments for 10 years under the Public Service Loan Forgiveness program.
Tuesday, May 25, I will be hosting a town hall event with Sen. Elizabeth Warren, NAACP President Derrick Johnson and two AFT members, and they will share their efforts to push to fix PSLF, work toward economic equity and cancel up to $50,000 of student debt. Click here to tune in.
We need to keep up the momentum to fix PSLF and alleviate the burden of student debt for borrowers, especially people of color. And we must tell the Biden administration to act now to forgive $50,000 per student before it restarts student loan payments, which is scheduled for September.
Please join us for an important update on the AFT’s campaign to fight for economic justice for millions of student loan borrowers and find out how you can get involved.
In unity,
Randi Weingarten
AFT president
