Great news during Mental Health Awareness Month: The House has passed the STANDUP Act, my bill to protect our students by implementing evidence-based suicide awareness and prevention training programs in grades 6-12! Now, it’s headed to the Senate.
This bill is critical to curbing school violence and preventing youth suicide, and it must become law.

This is important: protecting our students and supporting their mental well-being as they recover from the pandemic must be our top priority. The National Institute of Mental Health has reported that suicide is the second leading cause of death in people ages 10-24. We must take action now.
That’s why I introduced the STANDUP Act and fought for its passage in the House. This bill will ensure teachers, administrators, and students have the resources they need to identify critical warning signs, intervene, and stop violence before it happens by providing students at risk with the mental health treatment they need.
