And Then Came Hope was inspired by the SS HOPE, the hospital ship started by Project HOPE's founder Dr. William B. Walsh. The spirit of the SS HOPE lives on today through Project HOPE's global health and humanitarian work in more than 20 countries.
Stephen will be joined by Project HOPE's Eden Ahmed Mdluli to discuss the book's themes of child wellness, mental health, and the important role of community-based health care systems. Eden has a background in public health and works on Project HOPE's maternal & child health programs. Neal Porter, publisher of And Then Came Hope, will moderate the discussion about the story -- a timeless & uplifting message that encourages conversations between a parent and child about health and wellbeing.

STEPHEN SAVAGE is a New York Times bestselling children's book illustrator and author whose accolades include a New York Times Best Illustrated Book for Polar Bear Night, a Geisel Honor for Supertruck, and a Sendak Fellowship. In addition to books, he has illustrated for the New York Times, the Wall Street Journal, Time, Newsweek, and Entertainment Weekly. His newest book, which will be discussed on June 2nd, is And Then Came Hope from Neal Porter Books/Holiday House. Brightly called it one of the best books for children in May 2021.

EDEN AHMED MDLULI joined Project HOPE in 2017 and currently serves as senior technical officer focusing on programming, strategic direction, and business development for maternal, newborn and child health. Prior to joining Project HOPE, Eden served in technical specialist roles supporting maternal and child health for HIV, nutrition, malaria, and water sanitation projects in East and Southern Africa. She has her master's in public health from Boston University with a focus on maternal and child health and is a certified project management professional and development program manager with 10 years of experience in global health.
