MyNewsLA.com Police Identify Man Accused Of Antisemitic Attack Outside Westside Restaurant Authorities have identified a man arrested in connection with a suspected antisemitic attack outside a Westside sushi restaurant this week. Xavier Pabon, 30, of Banning was taken into custody Friday night and booked on suspicion of assault with a deadly weapon, the Los Angeles Police Department said in a news release. Detectives will also recommend additional hate-crime charges, they said. Pabon was released Sunday after posting $275,000 bond and was next due in court Sept. 23, jail records state. Police described the man as one of the primary suspects in the attack, which took place about 10 p.m. Tuesday and involved people shouting anti-Israel slogans outside a restaurant in the West Hollywood area. Investigators are continuing to look for the other suspects, they said. Los Angeles Times ‘It’s A Scary Time’ For L.A. Jews As Attacks Bring Heightened Security, Anxiety Remi Franklin, a jujitsu practitioner and security volunteer, stood guard on La Brea Avenue on Saturday afternoon as the neighborhood’s highly visible Orthodox Jewish population made their way home from Shabbat services. Franklin, who is Jewish and grew up in Malibu, smiled broadly as people walked past him. “Good shabbos!” he said. “Stay safe!” People smiled back, appreciative. It was the second day in a row that Franklin, 37, and other volunteers had come to the Fairfax District to offer protection to a community on edge. Some stood on the sidewalk offering to walk people to and from synagogue, asking if they felt safe, and just wishing them a happy sabbath. Others were more incognito, sitting in parked cars. “Last night, seeing you guys walk people home, it was surreal,” said one man who stopped to thank Franklin. “We’re proud to have you.” Franklin said he felt called to offer his support after multiple recent antisemitic attacks, including a violent attack on diners at a West Hollywood area sushi restaurant. A video capturing part of the Tuesday night attack shows people in a caravan of cars flying Palestinian flags yelling, “F— you” and “You guys should be ashamed of yourselves” as they drive by the restaurant. Police arrested one man in connection with the incident Friday. The man was arrested on suspicion of assault with a deadly weapon, police said. Detectives will recommend additional hate-crime charges. Los Angeles Times Alleged Drug Trafficker Arrested In Los Angeles After Being Extradited From France Federal authorities arrested an alleged international drug trafficker Friday in Los Angeles after he was extradited from France, prosecutors said. Jose Guillermo Grosso Gamez, 41, of Sinaloa, Mexico, was taken into custody at Los Angeles International Airport. He is expected to be arraigned Monday, according to the U.S. Attorney’s Office in Los Angeles. It was not immediately clear if he had an attorney who could speak on his behalf. Grosso, also known under his aliases “Greenhills” and “Martinez Asociados,” is considered to be the lead defendant in a case that charges 17 people, prosecutors said. He is only the third person to be taken into custody on the 2018 indictment. The indictment alleges that their organization shipped thousands of pounds of methamphetamine globally, sometimes by hiding the drugs inside consumer and industrial products. Grosso allegedly tried to ship about 265 pounds (120.20 kilograms) of meth — hidden in computer equipment — from Mexico to Australia, prosecutors said. Law enforcement intercepted the shipment in Memphis. Grosso also bribed government officials in Mexico, prosecutors allege. KTLA 5 Beverly Hills Man Arrested For Attempting To Hire Hitman To Murder Girlfriend A Beverly Hills man was arrested on a murder-for-hire charge, alleging he tried to hire a hitman to kill a woman he briefly dated. 24-year-old Scott Quinn Berkett was arrested Friday after being charged in a federal criminal complaint that alleges he sent thousands of dollars in Bitcoin to arrange the murder. He then wired another $1,000 to the "hitman," who was actually an undercover FBI agent, according to the United States Attorney’s Office. According to the affidavit, Berkett met "victim 1" online last year and the woman flew to Los Angeles to meet him in October. According to the Department of Justice, "victim 1" described Berkett’s behavior as "sexually aggressive" and tried multiple times to break off the relationship. The affidavit states that in April, a family member who had learned that Berkett continued to contact "victim 1", called and sent text messages to Berkett’s father’s phone and on April 20, Berkett appears to have responded saying "consider this matter closed." However, officials say Berkett allegedly contacted a group on the dark web that advertised murder-for-hire services. FOX 11 Police Patrols To Increase Across SoCal As Anti-Semitic Violence Spikes Many people in the Jewish community say they are afraid as violence continues to erupt here in the U.S. and abroad in the Middle East. Local faith leaders are coming together to show a united front to speak out against local anti-Semitic hate crimes. Earlier this week in the Fairfax District, an Orthodox Jewish man says he was attacked while running from a pro-Palestinian caravan that was chasing him as he was walking from home to a synagogue. On Tuesday evening in the Beverly Grove area, diners said they too were verbally and physically assaulted. Jewish leaders who spoke out on Friday were calling on officials to increase police patrols leading into the Sabbath, a holy day of prayer and rest, which starts at sunset every Friday night. LAPD spoke out saying they’ve increased patrols in Jewish and Muslim communities on Friday night. CBS 2 AAA, CHP Recommend Taking These Steps To Avoid Being A Victim Of Road Rage A road-rage attack that led to the fatal shooting of a child on Friday drew national attention to road violence on Southern California freeways and had authorities urging motorists confronted by an angry driver to stay calm and call police. Even if you’re driving carefully, there will be others who drive aggressively and are in a hurry to get somewhere. Millions of drivers around the nation drive aggressively at some point, according to a 2019 study by the American Automobile Association. On Friday morning, a road-rage attack on the 55 Freeway in Orange ended in the shooting death of a 6-year-old boy, California Highway Patrol officials said. A manhunt was underway for the suspect, who reportedly drove a white sedan, possibly a Volkswagen, said Officer Florentino Olivera, a spokesman for the CHP’s Santa Ana office. AAA and law enforcement officials recommend taking these steps if confronted by an aggressive driver. Try not to engage and try to avoid escalating the situation, law enforcement officials say. Olivera tells his own family to ignore aggressive drivers. But if a road rage situation somehow escalates, he said the best thing to do is call law enforcement using handless devices, such as Bluetooth, or find somewhere safe to pull over and call. It’s also important to be aware of your surroundings, in case someone does become violent. That way information can be reported to officials, Olivera said. Los Angeles Daily News Gang Member Who Dragged, Paralyzed NYPD Detective Busted Again In Stolen Vehicle Pursuit A teenage gangbanger who got a lenient sentence after dragging and crippling an NYPD detective was busted once again Sunday for leading police on a chase in a stolen car. In a scene similar to the 2017 chase that put Detective Dalsh Veve in a wheelchair and forever altered his life, Justin Murrell allegedly hit the gas during a car stop in Brooklyn early Sunday, cops said. Murrell, 19, a reputed Crips member, walked free last year, after being sentenced to 1⅓ to four years at a juvenile detention center for the June 3, 2017, chase. Veve, who was responding to a shots-fired call, was questioning the then-15-year-old Murrell near E. 53rd St. and Tilden Ave. when the teen hit the gas, dragging the officer for two blocks. Veve held on for his life, firing a bullet that struck Murrell in the jaw. He eventually fell from the runaway car and suffered catastrophic head and body injuries. The brain damage left him unable to speak. A jury refused to convict Murrell of attempted murder but found him guilty of assault. On Sunday, cops tried to stop Murrell at a red light on New Lots Ave. and Hinsdale St. in East New York about 1:20 a.m. but he sped off, driving erratically before officers ultimately stopped his vehicle, authorities said. New York Daily News Portland Police Demand Body Cameras, No Money Mayor Says Portland, Oregon, is one of the few major U.S. cities where police do not wear body cameras and that doesn’t sit well with officers on the street. "I know why they don't want body cameras on police officers in the City of Portland," Daryl Turner, executive director of the Portland Police Association, told Fox. "Because the rhetoric that we see from the media, the rhetoric that we see from the politicians would be not true. They would see that in color on those cameras the work that we do is good work." Portland Mayor Ted Wheeler says he supports police body cameras but tells Fox News there are "significant financial challenges created by the virus-caused recession." Of the 40 specimens analyzed by the Los Angeles County Department of Public Health laboratory in the past week, 53% were the UK variant and none were the California variant. The lab also detected six Brazil (P.1) variants last week and one South African variant (B.1.351). Officials said recent research has provided evidence that the currently available vaccines appear to be highly effective against the variants circulating in Southern California. They cited a new study by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control which showed that over the last few months, when the variants have been circulating, vaccines reduced the risk of getting sick with COVID-19 by 94% among fully vaccinated health care workers.
