Ms Foundation for Women - Fourth of July 2017

John,

Before we come to the end of Hispanic Heritage Month on October 15th, I want to uplift Latina feminist activists, organizers, and movement builders working tirelessly to ensure that our communities are informed and organized to resist the ongoing assault against our lives.

As the Vice-Chair of the Ms. Foundation for Women Board of Directors, I can tell you that the Ms. Foundation is serious about our leadership reflecting the communities we organize with. From our board to our staff to our grantee partners, we work in solidarity across the Hispanic/Latinx diaspora. We believe that cultural vibrancy catalyzes all of the wins that happen in our movements.

The political climate for Hispanic people is bleak. The Trump Administration continues to terrorize our communities with violent rhetoric about immigrants and refugees. They do not care about the women, children, and families they’re putting at risk. Despite these attacks on us, we continue to show up. We organize for the betterment of people in the name of democracy.

It is an act of deep courage to state boldly and without shame who we are: I am a proud Latina.

My Hispanic heritage shapes the work I do in this world. I serve on the board at the Ms. Foundation because I believe that Latinas deserve safety, health, and economic justice. The Ms. Foundation supports the work that Latinx women and girls are doing in their local communities to transform this society into one that celebrates and elevates our lives.

We are all in this together.

Alicia Lara
Ms. Foundation Board of Directors, Vice-Chair
