The Dominican Republic is one of the riskiest places in the world for pregnant women and newborns -- and the pandemic has only made it worse.
Ninety-five out of every 100,000 women won't survive childbirth. Nearly 20 out of every 1,000 babies won't live to be one month old. Teresa Narvaez has been with Project HOPE for 31 years. A nurse by training, she is our Country Director in the Dominican Republic. "What motivates me is seeing the birth of healthy children and mothers committed to giving them the best lives they can," Teresa says.

Teresa established and now oversees 3 maternal and child health clinics -- protecting the health of 150,000 people each year.
Project HOPE trains health workers and improves their skills -- so they can provide quality care in their own communities.
Because there were more and better trained health care workers, more women and babies survived childbirth. Then the pandemic hit...
And as resources were diverted for COVID-19, health care became less available -- leading to more preventable maternal and infant deaths.
