Mask Mandate + COVID Restriction Updates

Last week, in response to evolving CDC guidance and falling COVID rates, Governor Northam lifted mask requirements for most circumstances. Masks are still required on public transportation, in health care settings, and in congregate settings. All unvaccinated people are still strongly urged to wear a mask.

Starting this Friday, May 28th, Governor Northam will be lifting pandemic-related restrictions on capacity and social distancing for establishments. You can read more about the Governor's decision here.

This new guidance comes as we round a corner in our pandemic response -- as of today, only 236 new COVID cases were reported in the Commonwealth, and the percent positivity rate is only 2.8%, which is the lowest rate since the start of the pandemic. We are coming out of the woods, and the best way to continue this trend is to get your shot ASAP if you haven't already. If you haven't gotten your vaccine, please continue to wear your mask.

Vaccine News

On Tuesday, I participated in the "It's Our Shot" Virginia Statewide Day of Action! All across the Commonwealth, people shared why they chose to get the COVID-19 vaccine, and encouraged their friends and neighbors to do the same.

I got my shot not just to protect myself, but to protect my family and my community. Studies have shown that people who are fully vaccinated are much less likely to get sick with COVID-19, and are almost 100% protected from hospitalization or death. Early data also suggests that vaccinated people are less likely to spread COVID-19 to others. How many lives will you save by getting your shot?

You can easily make a vaccine appointment for yourself or your kids (12 and up) today by visiting vaccinate.virginia.gov, or by visiting your local health department website. You can also call 877-VAX-IN-VA for assistance in making an appointment, or text your zip code to GETVAX (428829). Vaccines are completely free of charge, and are now widely available at health department vaccination clinics, community vaccination centers, doctor's offices, grocery stores, and pharmacies -- no more waiting on a waitlist or refreshing a website. If you've been waiting for the right time, that time is now!
