Friend --
These days, Republicans are well known for burying their heads in the sand. But House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy may just have set a new low standard for his party.
Last week, McCarthy announced his opposition to a bipartisan commission to investigate the January 6 insurrection at the US Capitol. This is despite numerous concessions being made by Democrats on the structure and scope of the commission and despite the fact that Republican Rep. John Katko was involved in actually writing the bill!
It's shocking to see the depths McCarthy will sink to in order to appease Donald Trump and his base. McCarthy isn't even hiding that this is a purely political move -- Republican sources in Congress told reporters that McCarthy explicitly said he doesn't want any more damaging information about Trump and his role in the insurrection to come out.
McCarthy knows what happened that day -- he was there. Many of his colleagues in Congress feared for their lives as the mob stormed the building. His own party's vice president, Mike Pence, was nearly the target of an assassination attempt by the rioters.
This is the man who would be Speaker of the House if Democrats lose in 2022. Our majority is razor-thin and likely to get thinner with Republican state legislatures gerrymandering new congressional districts this year. We need your help to be able to fight for every single seat we can.
