Dear John,
You may not have heard of it, but Prager University is among the most insidious right-wing outfits on the internet.
PragerU videos have collected nearly five billion views with titles like "How to Steal an Election: Mail-in Ballots," and others that deny the existence of transgender people and compare masking mandates to Nazism.
And, of course, PragerU isn't a university at all. So how does it get such a big audience? Money.
PragerU claims to have a $25 million budget, thanks to support from fracking billionaires and other wealthy conservatives. Much of that money is poured directly into online ads to promote videos on platforms like Facebook and YouTube. When PragerU's videos are viewed, social media algorithms drive traffic to the more overt right-wing content pushed by the likes of Ben Shapiro and Steven Crowder.
This far-reaching spread of misinformation is why more than half of all Republicans believe the election was stolen and that masks and social distancing have become partisan culture war issues. And perhaps most terrifying of all is PragerU that is now targeting younger and younger audiences--including with new so-called educational efforts that focus on kids as young as kindergarten-age.
Inequality Media is one of the only progressive organizations with a large enough following to go toe-to-toe with PragerU. We've launched a major initiative to test and deploy the most effective video content to inoculate the public against these lies. And we're working to use search-term techniques that are similar to those PragerU uses. But we need your help to go big.
Will you make a donation to Inequality Media and help counter the toxic lies pushed every day by PragerU and their right-wing ilk?
Dennis Prager started out as just another right-wing talk-radio personality. But with funding from fracking billionaires Dan and Farris Wilks and other right-wing billionaires, he's built a massive global-distribution platform that serves as a gateway to the even more overt right-wing content by the likes of Ben Shapiro and Steven Crowder.
Prager pushes its videos into schools--over 6,000 parents and teachers have signed up so far. Then, when PragerU's videos are assigned by teachers for students to watch at home, more right-wing content comes up for kids on social media and YouTube.
Prager has for years blamed the Palestinian people--and even the Islamic religion--for the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu even used one of its videos to justify the actions of the Israeli military.
Schools, the internet, and now even far-right leaders abroad--the organization is advancing its right-wing ideology everywhere.
To fight back, we've launched a highly strategic new effort to test and deploy the most effective content to inoculate the public against these lies, and we're getting incredibly exciting results.
In fact, our most recent tests found that our videos focusing on the corrupting role of money in politics are ten times more effective at grabbing and holding viewers' attention than what we've seen in the past with other issues.
The next step is to get these proven-effective videos in front of as many people as possible--but we don't have fracking billionaires to fund millions of dollars in online ads. We rely on small donations from everyday people like you.
Please chip in whatever you can afford today and help battle against this dangerous threat to our democracy.
Thank you for standing on the side of truth,
Robert Reich
