John,
The House Natural Resources Committee just voted a bill out of committee to raise the royalty fees oil and gas companies pay to operate on federal lands.
It’s a huge step toward ensuring these companies pay their fair share for using our public lands.
Shockingly, the royalty fee has not increased since 1920, when Woodrow Wilson was president.
Fossil fuel companies currently pay a 12.5% fee to the U.S. Treasury on their revenue from onshore leases and 18.75% for offshore leases. If passed by the full House and the Senate, the onshore royalty fee would increase to 18.75% as well.
The move, spearheaded by SEEC member Rep. Katie Porter of California, redresses the imbalance while significantly reducing fossil fuel subsidies through low fees. These low fees are essentially well under market “rent,” which helps pad the industry’s bottom line. Will you pitch in to help her and other SEEC members get this increase passed through the full House? [[link removed]]

Republicans on the committee objected, falsely suggesting the move to raise the onshore royalty fee was an attempt to stop any domestic oil production in the United States.
Rep. Porter responded, “What will change is the fact that the oil and gas companies are getting effectively tax-paid welfare. We are all being shorted the revenue that taxpayers collectively, Democrat or Republican, deserve.”
John, SEEC members of Congress like Katie Porter are leading the charge to tackle climate change and end taxpayer subsidies for fossil fuels.
Will you chip in today and let our SEEC members know you’re standing with them as they work in Congress to protect our environment? [[link removed]]
