n November 2018, during an interview at the University of Virginia Law School, retired Supreme Court Justice Anthony Kennedy explained that Williams Institute data informed his ruling in favor of marriage equality. Our 2013 study, LGBT Parenting in the US, by Gary Gates found more than 111,000 same-sex couples were raising an estimated 170,000 children. And for Justice Kennedy, "it just seemed wrong under the Constitution that over 100,000 children of gay parents could not have their parents marry."
While the decision in Obergefell v. Hodges was a historic moment, the fight for marriage equality was years in the making. And the work of the Williams Institute helped pave the way. Lee Badgett led a series of reports estimating the impact of same-sex weddings on state economies. Ilan Meyer testified in California's Prop 8 trial, which ultimately upheld marriage equality in the state. Adam Romero and Gary Gates submitted amicus briefs in 15 cases addressing marriage equality, including Obergefell v. Hodges.
