I’m writing to you today to share why I’m running to represent Massachusetts’ 1st District in Congress.

I’m running because our communities in Western Massachusetts are struggling, disparities are growing, and too many people feel left behind. It’s time for a Congressman who puts his constituents and our needs first instead of the DC status quo and corporate special interests. After more than 30 years, it’s time for a change.

A bit about me: I was born to working-class parents, came out as gay at 16, and was the first in my family to attend college. At age 22, I was elected the mayor of my hometown of Holyoke, MA, and in my four terms, I’ve fought for progress that has put us on the national map. We’ve renewed our economy, acted boldly to protect our immigrants and our environment, and shown that good, people-centered government can make our lives better.

I’m now running for Congress because listening and people-focused service are not what the 1st District is getting from Congressman Neal, our current representative in Congress. For 30 years, with the backing of special interests and corporate PAC cash, Neal has climbed the ladder of power in Washington—but he hasn’t used that power to achieve meaningful results for the people of our district.

We’re going to fight for priorities that will actually improve the quality of life for people here in Western Massachusetts—priorities like Medicare for All, reproductive justice, and solutions to our climate crisis. And we’re going to do it all without accepting a dime of corporate PAC money. We’re going to do it by putting people at the center of this campaign.
