I’m deeply concerned about what I read last night in Politico:
“Mitch McConnell’s opposition to a bipartisan proposal to independently investigate the Capitol insurrection is turning GOP senators against the bill, potentially dooming its prospects in the Senate.”
Mitch McConnell wants to stop a full investigation of what happened on January 6 to protect Republican politicians like Josh Hawley and Ted Cruz. And most of all, he wants to protect Donald Trump.
But we can’t just move on from the deadly and destructive attack on the Capitol. Our democracy is at stake, and I will continue fighting for full accountability for all those responsible for this attack.
During the insurrection, I remember hunkering down in a room of the Capitol with some of the very GOP members who helped fuel the attack — and who still push the Big Lie today. They continue Trump’s lies about the election results and threaten our democracy. Of course, this was after Trump, Hawley, Cruz, and other Republican lawmakers used their large platforms to incite people with falsehoods and propaganda. It’s clear to me that disinformation has become one of the hallmarks of the Republican Party.
We know that Mitch McConnell is an obstacle to any policies that will secure economic, social, racial, or environmental justice. Now, he’s an obstacle to a bipartisan investigation that will help our democracy survive. We can’t let McConnell continue to stop a full and complete investigation.
In solidarity,
Pramila
