Every May, our nation commemorates Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month. I am honored to celebrate the innumerable contributions of AAPI Americans to science, the arts, public service, medicine, business, and more.

As we celebrate this month, we must remember — Asian American and Pacific Islander history is American history.

While we still have a long way to go to live up to the ideals of America, please know that I am working tirelessly to address the systemic issues that have led to inequity and injustice in our country. No one should fear for their lives based on the color of their skin — just this week Congress passed legislation to combat hate crimes and would require the Justice Department to expedite any hate crimes related to COVID-19.

Ours is a nation of immigrants. We’re a collection of people who came from all over the world to seek a better life, freedom, opportunity, and tolerance. Please join me this month, and everyday, in celebrating Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders across our nation.
