If history is of any indication, our campaign and the movement we worked hard to build could be left vulnerable in the next election cycle.
We saw it with the Squad in this last election cycle with Reps. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, Ilhan Omar, and Rashida Tlaib. After they won their seats in 2018, many questioned whether or not they'd be able to win again and faced challenges from Republican and political establishment insurgents who raised millions of dollars and unleashed attack ads.
And while all three managed to win re-election, the fact still remains: 88% of congressional races were won by the candidate who raised more money. That's why we're building up a grassroots-funded war chest, starting now, so we can be prepared for the fights ahead.
Look, John. The 2020 elections weren't easy for AOC, Ilhan, or Rashida. But the truth is that Jamaal will enter his first re-election at an even more vulnerable time.
That's because — despite achieving a majority in the House, Senate, and the White House — Democrats actually lost Congressional seats in 2020. Now, our majority in the House is down to an eight-seat margin.
So, as we look ahead to 2022, we're left to defend one of the slimmest House majorities in modern-day history, while states like New York and California lost seats in Census apportionment.
Our opponents know this too, and they're keeping an even closer eye on us to see if we can keep up in 2022. They'll be ready to act accordingly, just as they did with AOC, Ilhan, and Rashida in 2020 — which is why we need to loudly continue showing the strength of our movement, starting now.
