John,

Tim Eyman is back with a misleading, confusing initiative that would slash state and local transportation budgets and lead to dramatic increases in climate pollution for Washington state. With the election just a few weeks away, we need to make sure to tell our friends, family, and networks to vote NO on Tim Eyman’s I-976.

Our state and world is facing a climate crisis and we are already feeling the impacts: bigger and more intense fires that devastate communities and forests alike, warmer waters that are inhospitable to our iconic salmon and orcas, and more frequent and intense heat waves that hit the most vulnerable among us the hardest. We know we must take action to curb climate pollution and invest in the right types of solutions for our health, safety, and livability for all Washingtonians.

Transportation accounts for nearly 50% of greenhouse gas emissions statewide. Tim Eyman’s Initiative 976 would repeal critical transportation money that funds the maintenance of our roads and our transit systems across the state. It would undermine our ability to invest in any improvements like expanding transit, building voter-approved projects, and improving freight corridors -- all tools for us to address our emissions.

I-976 removes $4 billion from the state’s budget to invest in pedestrian, bike, and transit efforts and cuts $60 million in funding every year for 63 cities across Washington. That means more cars on our roads and less options for all of us. That also means cutting the ability of local communities to decide how to invest in infrastructure and cut climate pollution.

Washington needs to be investing in a more efficient and better-run transportation system, not going backwards to cut existing programs or projects. Right now, communities across Washington are experiencing congestion at unprecedented levels. Research has shown (1) that vehicles emit up to 20% less GHGs if they’re consistently driven at a moderate speed and accelerate and decelerate smoothly. In other words, more congestion leads to more climate pollution. This also impacts the health and safety of people living and working along those roadways. Each year, Washingtonians spend hundreds of hours and thousands of dollars stuck in traffic.

With I-976’s draconian cuts to transportation funding, we’ll not only be sitting in traffic, but we’ll also be taking a step backward in climate progress.

Vote NO on Initiative 976.

Thanks for all you do,

Kat Holmes
