Donald Trump incited an insurrection of right-wing extremists against our government at the U.S. Capitol on January 6th and if we do not pursue truth, justice, and accountability, it could happen again.

This week, a large bipartisan majority of the House passed a bill to establish a January 6 Commission. But before the House bill even came to a vote, Mitch McConnell made it clear that he won’t support any bipartisan efforts to uncover the facts behind that dark day in our history.

It’s an absolute disgrace that some elected officials would put politics over country. One Republican House member even called the rioters’ assault a “normal tourist visit.” But photos from the insurrection showed that same congressman barricading a door against the mob with Capitol Police officers.

The difficult truth we must confront is that despite all of the tremendous progress we’ve made in the last few months, we are still dangerously close to backsliding into demagoguery and authoritarianism.

We’ve seen it with the all-out assault on voting rights at the state level, and we’re seeing it more every day as one Republican leader after another compromises principle to provide cover for the former president. And those who refuse, like Liz Cheney, get ostracized.

I’m not giving up — I’m going to do everything I can to ensure Congress establishes a January 6 Commission to determine the full facts of what happened on that fateful day, and take action to make sure it never happens again.

But right now, we have just a 50-50 Senate majority. If we lose a single seat in next year’s election and Mitch McConnell takes back the Senate gavel, accountability for the January 6 insurrection will be off the table.
