May 21, 2021
Dear John,
In April, we at CIRC Action Fund raised over $1000 to support a statewide Immigration Legal Defense Fund. Our team at CIRC Action Fund has been working diligently during the 2021 legislative session to advocate for immigrant rights on the state and federal level, but we still need your support to make our goals a reality. Will you donate and help us make a significant impact on Colorado’s immigrant and refugee communities?
Yes, count me in! [[link removed]]
Not right now, but I would still like to support in other ways! [[link removed]]
Bills Updates: HB1194 & SB131
Since our last newsletter, our bills have been moving quickly through the Colorado legislature! After passing through their respective chambers’ appropriation committees, both of our bills passed through their second and third readings and have now moved to their opposite chambers . HB1194, Immigration Legal Defense Fund [[link removed]] , received prioritization in the House Appropriations Committee’s considerations. And in the Senate, SB131, Protect Personal Identifying Information Kept by State [[link removed]] , received bipartisan support with five Republican senators voting in favor. The support for our bills demonstrate that our legislators understand the importance of upholding immigrant rights. We hope that this support from Colorado’s legislators continues to push our bills forward!
Yesterday, HB1194 passed through the Senate Judiciary Committee and is now moving to the Senate Appropriations Committee!
We’ll also be updating everyone on ways to support our efforts once the bills are headed to full chambers. As always, we want to thank our community advocates and legislators for advancing these bills, ensuring that our state upholds immigrants’ rights to data privacy and legal defense!
Federal Legislative Updates
CIRC Action Fund and some CIRC Members participated in two lobby days in May, including the National Partnership for New Americans' (NPNA) National Virtual Lobby Day and the We Are Home National Lobby Day. Our meetings with Senators Bennet and Hickenlooper, and Representatives Perlmutter and Buck focused on pushing lawmakers to include a pathway towards citizenship in the next federal recovery package.
Many democratic lawmakers seemed supportive of an equitable pathway to citizenship, and we would like to thank Representative Neguse specifically for spotlighting his support for the pathway to citizenship in a letter to party leadership and the Biden administration. Representative Neguse has also championed critical bills such as the Citizenship for Essential Workers Act. We look forward to partnering with Representative Neguse and other lawmakers on future efforts to advance immigrant rights!
Colorado Agricultural Workers' Rights Bill
The Agricultural Workers’ Rights bill, S21-087 [[link removed]] , has also been moving through the Colorado legislature this spring! After passing through the Senate Appropriations Committee and full Senate, S087 is now moving to be considered in House committees!
This bill is essential to empowering the many immigrant workers in the agricultural industry. By ensuring health equity, fair wages, and labor protections for all agricultural workers, S087 guarantees that these folks will have the same basic rights as any other workers in Colorado. Thank you to our advocates for advancing workers and immigrant rights!
