Hello,
102 years ago today, the House passed the 19th Amendment, granting women the right to vote. This was a huge victory for equality and democracy -- but not for every American.
It wasn't until nearly half a century later that Congress guaranteed the voting rights of Black, brown, and Indigenous men and women. These necessary and overdue voter protections only came about with the passage of the Voting Rights Act of 1965. Sadly, the Supreme Court gutted these protections in 2013.
Today, we are seeing a rise in discriminatory voter identification laws, reductions in the number of polling locations, and restrictions on voting methods across the country. And all of these voter suppression tactics disproportionately harm voters of color, seniors, and young people.
Team, we need to pass the John Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act to restore the integrity of the original Voting Rights Act. On today's anniversary, add your name if you agree we need to expand voting rights.
