John,
After the insurrection on January 6th, CREW pledged that we’d track corporate donations to the 147 members of Congress who voted to reject the election results—feeding the Big Lie that led to the attack on the Capitol. This week, we released a report fulfilling the first phase of that commitment. Here’s what we’ve found so far:
-
$2.6 million. That’s how much corporate and industry PACs have contributed to campaigns, leadership PACs and party committees allied with the so-called Sedition Caucus.
-
103. That’s how many of the 147 members who supported the insurrection by spreading the Big Lie have already gotten corporate donations.
-
$44,000. That’s how much Rep. Glenn Thompson (R-PA), the top individual recipient, has received from 17 different corporate and industry groups.
-
$42,500. That’s how much Cigna has given to seven Sedition Caucus members and both party committees that support them, after saying it would “discontinue support of any elected official who encouraged or supported violence, or otherwise hindered a peaceful transition of power.”
That’s just the start—for more, read CREW’s full investigation of the millions in corporate spending that’s boosting members of Congress who rejected democracy.
These numbers are truly discouraging—they make it crystal clear that some companies are choosing to prioritize their own interests over our democracy. In some cases, they went back on pledges they made to halt or re-evaluate donations mere weeks after the deadly insurrection. This is unacceptable, and we’re going to keep bringing these donations to light and holding these companies accountable, no matter what.
Thank you,
Robert Maguire
