Alabama Arise held a legislative wrap-up event Tuesday night to go over what happened – and what didn't happen – during the Legislature's 2021 regular session, which ended Monday. This is a recording of that wrap-up where Arise staff detail the good and bad from the session – and discuss the next steps to continue advancing our vision for a better Alabama.

 
 

TerriTalks: Discussing the Child Tax Credit with Carol Gundlach

Four in five Alabama children will benefit from new federal Child Tax Credit improvements in the American Rescue Plan Act. In a recent Facebook Live session, Arise’s Carol Gundlach spoke with U.S. Rep. Terri Sewell to talk about this transformative new policy to fight child poverty.

Alabama Daily News: Bill changing civil asset forfeiture law goes to Ivey

Thanks to Arise members and other advocates, civil asset forfeiture reform has begun in Alabama. SB 210 passed both the House and Senate unanimously Monday, placing some important limits on the worst abuses of this harmful practice.

Alabama Political Reporter: Bill to curb governor, state health officer’s emergency powers fails

In another win for Arise members, SB 97 died in the House on the final day of the session. The bill sought to limit the ability of the governor and state health officer to respond effectively during a future public health emergency like the COVID-19 pandemic. The vote was close, and your advocacy made a difference!

Alabama Daily News: Alabama to end federal pandemic-related unemployment benefits

Arise’s Dev Wakeley describes the history of Alabama’s hostile policies toward working people after Gov. Kay Ivey announced that the state will end all federally funded pandemic-related unemployment insurance benefits next month. “It is a terrible policy decision on top of a prior terrible policy decision,” Wakeley told Alabama Daily News.
