Donald Trump wreaked havoc on our country for four years, but the Republican Party has only deepened their ties to him since he lost the presidential race to Joe Biden. The GOP's latest step? House Republicans appointed unabashed Trump loyalist Elise Stefanik to the third most powerful leadership position in their party.
So just who is Elise Stefanik?
Congresswoman Stefanik represents a district in upstate New York, and she might be the most visible example of just how far loyalty to Trump can take you in today's Republican Party. Despite voting against some of Trump's initiatives early on in his term, she actually began to support him more, not less, as his administration descended into chaos.
Stefanik was one of the Republicans chosen to defend Trump during his first impeachment trial. She voted to contest the presidential election result certification mere hours after the Capitol had been attacked by a pro-Trump mob. She also voted against his impeachment for inciting that mob.
The only reason Stefanik was chosen to replace Liz Cheney, a far-right conservative in her own right, was because Congresswoman Stefanik is willing to steadfastly defend Trump's Big Lie that he won the 2020 election.
Make no mistake: The Republican Party will now only tolerate 100% obedience to Trump, no matter how egregious his lies are.
