Friend,

I’ve been in the race for Lt. Governor for 10 months now, and I still get asked the same question every day: Why are you running?

I want to tell you my honest answer to that question. But first, I need to remind you that Election Day is right around the corner.

I never planned to run for office. But this time last year, we were facing down a chaotic world. A deadly pandemic was raging through our most vulnerable populations. The murders of George Floyd and Breonna Taylor had just sparked an international protest movement. The economy was falling out from under working people as unemployment reached historic highs. Wildfires were turning the skies of the West Coast blood red. I looked around and saw leadership that was wholly unprepared to meet these huge challenges. So I decided to step up.

I knew this wouldn’t be easy. I’m a first-time candidate. I don’t have a phone full of wealthy donors to call. All I’ve got is the support of communities from across Virginia who see that I have the experience and vision to build a coalition for progressive change.

And that’s all I really need.

When I was the youngest-ever President of the largest NAACP chapter in Virginia, I worked with the public schools, criminal justice reform activists, and local student groups to get armed police officers out of our schools. To drastically reduce student arrests and dismantle the school-to-prison pipeline. To take down the name of Robert E. Lee High School—and change it to that of the great John R. Lewis.

I know what it takes to disrupt the status quo. I’ve brought together entrenched institutions and change-making advocates before. As Lt. Governor, I’ll fight for racial, economic, and environmental justice. I’ll make room at the negotiating table for people who understand the problems their communities face and won’t stop at anything until they’re solved.

I’ve been one of those advocates before.

And I know that it takes teamwork to build a movement. By supporting my campaign for Lt. Governor, you’re saying that you believe in me to meet this moment. To create a movement for justice and equity for all. To make Virginia a place of progress and national leadership on the issues that matter most.

I can’t do this alone.

Can you make a $3 donation to my campaign today? With your support, I know we can win this primary and beat the GOP in November »

Movements aren’t built by a single person alone. They’re built when people with shared values stand together to create something bigger than any individual action.

I’m glad you’re on my team.

In solidarity,
Sean Perryman
