John —

My personal passion for the work of freeing the wrongly convicted started years ago when I directed and produced a film called Conviction. It told the story of Kenny Waters who spent 18 years in prison for a murder he didn’t commit. In 2001, Kenny was exonerated with the help of the Innocence Project and his sister, Betty Anne Waters, who put herself through college and law school for the sole purpose of helping her brother.

During the production of the film, I got to know so many people who work at the Innocence Project, and I became deeply invested in their work almost immediately. I started working regularly with the organization, and now I’m proud to say that I’m an Innocence Project board member.

I’ve seen firsthand the profound impact that the Innocence Project has had not only on the lives of the innocent and their families, but on the movement to reform our criminal legal system as a whole.

So today, I’m reaching out to say thank you for your past support of this incredible organization, and am now asking you to turn that one-time donation into a monthly gift.

Continued support to the Innocence Project is crucial to the work of freeing the innocent and reforming the system. That’s why I’ve committed to match the first three months of all new monthly donations in the month of May, up to $10,000. That means if you donate $20 per month, in your first three months of contributions, the Innocence Project will actually receive $120.

After I started working with the Innocence Project on Conviction, it didn’t take long for me to realize that Kenny’s story — as shocking as it may seem — was not at all unique. Every single person who has been locked away for a crime they did not commit has a similarly traumatic story.

That’s why in addition to working to free those who are wrongly incarcerated, the Innocence Project is working to completely change the system. Because, right now, our system gets it wrong far too often and ensnares so many innocent people.

Together, we are creating a united front to say to every innocent person who is still languishing in prison: We believe in you, we have your backs, and we will not stop until you see the justice you deserve.

But we can’t do that without you. So please, consider making a recurring monthly donation to the Innocence Project today, and I’ll match the first three months of your donation, up to $10,000.

We will not stop fighting until we fix this nation’s broken system.

Thank you so much for your support,
